Many parents confuse between NAN PRO & PRE NAN. Both are popular formula milk brands that sound similar but are used in different situations.
NAN PRO is a formula for term babies. TERM baby means the baby is delivered on or after 37 completed gestational weeks. In other words, the baby is born a maximum of 3 weeks before the EDD( Estimated date of delivery, calculated based on the last menstrual period or ultrasound).
PRE NAN is for preterm babies born before 37 completed gestational weeks. Usually, these babies weigh less than 2.5 kg.
Sometimes, a term baby may weigh less than 2.5 kg( IUGR baby). You should use PRE NAN until the child crosses a weight of 2.5 kg.
A preterm baby or a low birth weight baby(<2.5 kg) has different nutritional requirements compared to a term baby. They need higher calorie concentration in milk, more protein, electrolytes, minerals & vitamins compared to a term baby.
COMPARISON OF NUTRITIONAL VALUE OF 1000ML PRE NAN & NAN PRO 1
(*Green color denotes a higher amount in comparison to competitor brand)
1. MACRONUTRIENTS
So, there is a higher calorie, higher protein, higher DHA & ARA in PRE NAN. It also contains medium-chain triglyceride, amino acid, and inositol. These things are essential for preterms but not so for term babies. Conversely, NAN PRO nan has nucleotide that is absent in PRE NAN.
2. ELECTROLYTES/MINERALS
Almost all minerals are higher in PRE NAN.
3. MICRONUTRIENTS/ VITAMINS
Almost all vitamins & micronutrients are higher in PRE NAN. NAN PRO has a probiotic that is not present in PRE NAN.
To conclude, PRE NAN has higher calories, protein, electrolytes, vitamins & most other micronutrients to fulfill the demand of a preterm or low birth weight baby. You should not use NAN PRO or any other term formula( for example Similac Advance, Similac Plus, Aptamil Gold, or lactogen) in these babies until they cross 37 gestational weeks & weigh more than 2.5 kg.
Personally, I don’t like any formula milk.
