Starting a formula for your baby is not a financial decision. Most parents start formula feeding on the false assumption that breast milk is insufficient for the baby or some other simple breastfeeding problems. Usually, in these cases, the baby first gets mixed feeding( both formula and breastfeeding), and gradually breastfeeding is rejected.
I could not find reliable data on the cost of feeding formula milk to Indian babies. some data from the USA is available, which points out that the average expenditure of formula milk feeding in the USA is 821.25 USD- 2920 USD(67,000 INR -2,40,000 INR) in 1st year of life.
While calculating the cost of formula feeding over 1 st year of life, I have considered that the baby is exclusively fed on formula milk.
First I have calculated the amount of milk required by an average healthy, normal-weight baby for 1 year.
0-1 month- 10 Litre(average 30-60ml/day- 500 ml/day)
1-2 month -19.5 Litre(average 650ml/day)
2-3 month- 22.5 Litre(average 750ml/day)
3-4 month- 25.5 Litre(average 850ml/day)
4-5 month- 28.5 Litre(average 950ml/day)
5-6 month- 30 Litre(average 1000ml/day)
6-12 month-144Litre(average 800ml/day)
total approximately 280 litres.
One packet of formula milk power is generally 400 grams in India. This 400-gram pack can be used to make 3 litres of formula milk.
So, total packet required- 280/3=93+;( considering loss during preparation, storge, feeding – lets assume that 100 packet of formula milk is required)
Cost of 100 packets of
Lactogen- 41500/-
Similac- 47500/
Dexolac- 41000/-
Nan pro 75000/-
Aptamil gold 83500/-
Similac advance 81000/-
