Babies need vaccine for development of immunity against different infections. You have to visit your pediatrician regularly for vaccination of your child . Here are few things that you should keep in mind after your child gets a shot.
Do not rush to your home after your child gets a vaccine. Wait for 15 min outside doctors clinic . Anaphylaxis (very very rare) is the most serious side effect following vaccination. It usually occur within 15 minute after a injection.
Care of injection site-
- Most parents starts to rub the injection site vigorously immediately after a shot. Don’t do that. Instead of rubbing, compress the site with mild pressure .
- At home you can place a cold damp cloth (cold compress) over the injection area to give relief.
- A small lump may appear at the injection site – no treatment is usually required. The swelling will disappear in a few weeks.
- If vaccine is given in thigh , the injection site should not get dirty with urine or stool(for 3 day).
Some common symptoms after shots-
- FEVER- most common side effect .Give paracetamol if baby’s temperature is 100 degree Fahrenheit or more . Generally, fever lasts for 24 hours after few vaccine(like pentavalent vaccine). in some case fever may persists for 72 hours after vaccination. If fever lasts more than 72 hours you should consult your doctor.
- PAIN at injection site- Another common symptom. Only paracetamol is advised.
- VOMITING / LOOSE STOOL- May occur after rotaviral or polio vaccine which are given orally. Usually resolves within a day.
- APPETITE LOSS- No specific treatment. Give more liquid food .Do not force feed.
- IRRITABILITY- Resolves within 1-2 day.
ADVERSE EFFECTS THAT SHOULD BE REPORTED TO YOUR DOCTOR (RARE ).
- Convulsion
- Non resolving common symptoms
- Rash all over body
- Abscess(pus formation) at injection site or excessive swelling and redness.
- Any unusual reactions
