Oil massaging of babies has been a custom in India for ages. It is believed to be originated in china in the 2nd century BC. Recently, it has gained popularity in western countries as well.

When to start?
When the baby weighs over 3 kg and is over one month of age, you can start an oil massage.
Which oils can be used for massage?
Any nonirritant oil can be used. For example- coconut oil, olive oil, almond oil, sunflower oil, etc. Do not use mustard oil.
When?
Ideally, between 10 AM-12 PM before giving a bath.
How many hours after a feed?
1 hour after feeding.
Duration of massage?
15-20 min.
Who should do the massage of the baby?
Preferably mother.
How to massage?
Massaging should be done when the baby is awake and active. Try to talk and interact with the baby while massaging. Begin massaging from the front. Keep the baby in the supine position(lying horizontally with face and torso facing up). Use moderate pressure. Start rubbing the chest first, then the abdomen followed by the shoulder and arms, and the last legs. Finally, massage the back of your baby keeping him/her in the prone position. Massage the trunk followed by the arms and legs.
